In the past week three separate backflow preventer valves have been stolen along Bell Road in Glendale. Backflow preventer valves can cost as much as $1,200 to replace, but only brings pennies on the dollar when illegally scrapped by the thieves taking them. In addition, police have had numerous reports from city utility workers of metal lids on water meter boxes that are missing throughout the city. These lids cost an average of $140 to replace, and police believe they are also being sold as scrap metal.

The Glendale Police Department is asking the community for help in identifying the persons responsible. Detectives believe there's also the chance the backflow valves could be sold and reinstalled in other areas of the Valley by persons with expertise in the area of plumbing. If you have any information about these types of metal theft, please call the Glendale Police Department at 623-930-3000.
